Green Drakes 2024 Penns Creek

Seems like the only time I can find to update this site is once a year on May 28th – let’s see if we can’t do any better this year, shall we? Only time will tell.

That said, the Drakes were once again a delight to fish this year, along with many of the other usual hatches.

One thing I will add here is that folks should understand that this is not the kind of hatch you want to stay out all day and expect to catch.

In fact, my suggestion is that anglers focus on trying to catch some of the morning hatches or even try tossing a few streamers in the early part of the day and then consider taking a break around 11 or noon to relax and refuel for the evening. The days can be warm this time of year and staying out all day in 80+ degree weather will wear down even the most hardened and healthy angler. Inevitably in this situation, folks have beaten themselves to pulp and the water to a frothy, fish-less mess. Do yourself and the fish a favor, take it easy in the afternoon and be ready to hit the water again around 4pm or even later. The real fireworks don’t start until 8pm or often later and you want to have your “A” game when the magic hour arrives.

That said, we had a great guiding season this year and I’m looking forward to a few weeks of fishing on my own before the water warms up and we transition to bass and summer tying season preparing for the fall. Summer is a great time to work on your casting and I’ve been having a lot of fun pairing rods and lines to build some optimized rigs for specific tactics, maybe I’ll share a little about that later on this summer.

Well, that’s all I have for this May 28th – maybe I’ll stick with this updating stuff…maybe not – I’ll do what I can. But in the meantime – get out there and enjoy this season! Try something new, try a different approach or tactic or fly or stream or species or anything! Life’s too short to fish the same way and who knows – maybe you’ll find a new favorite!

May your cast be true and your stories get bigger every time.
