South Central PA Report 4/25/16: Yellow Breeches is running low and clear but the action on top has been better than recent years. The smorgasbord of bugs has many anglers scratching their heads. Little black caddis sz18 can be seen throughout most of the day and in clouds about an hour before dark. The black caddis proved to be the most productive over the past 48 hours. Larger tan caddis sz14/16 had fish rising in the late afternoon/early evening. Look for fish up against rocks or branches, picking off the caddis as they fall in or lay their eggs. Fish a tent-wing on top or swing/swim/skitter an X-wing. Also seen throughout the day were sporadic Hendricksons, March Browns and even Crane Flies. Closer to dark, the large Rotunda Sulphurs sz12/14 came off and fish were taking duns in slower water. The smaller Invaria (sulphurs) hatched sporadically but they are too early to be on the menu. Sz16 Hendricksons, sz14 March Browns, and a few sz16/18 sulphur sub-species as well as inconsistent sz16 caddis have been productive on Big Spring and Green Spring. Green Spring is running chalky, presumably due to the high level of agricultural activity and unregulated nitrogen fertilization of the surrounding farmland. Chubs have moved in from the Conodiguinet to spawn. The smaller freestoners are running low and need water but are still producing. Look for a sz16/18 BWO hatch during times of cloud cover the next 48 hours. Tight lines!
